About Me

I am a freshmen at VCU pursuing the world of fashion. I come from a small town where fashion was lacking and trends popped up two years late. I enjoy the creative side of things for my brain struggles to comprehend analytical concepts. I am very confident in my pursuit in merchandising for multiple reasons: my attention to detail, strong social skills, and initiative to be a leader but follow when needed.

I did not know that I wanted to pursue fashion as a career until high school came around and realized anything math or science related was going to be a chore rather than something I enjoyed. Fashion, in general, as always been my spark whether I knew it or not. For instance, I attended a private school all the way up until eighth grade that required us to wear uniforms. Every so often they would give us a free dress day where we could pick our own outfit. Although this excited everyone, for me in particular, I took it quite seriously. In my mind, I saw free dress day as the only day I could truly be myself and express who I am through my sense of style.

It was not until later when I consciously identified my insatiable love for fashion that my heart started skipping beats when I opened a Vogue magazine or passed a person dressed in trendy streetwear. Ever since, my creative side has been blossoming; the more I embrace my passion the more confident I am in my future. I am very excited for the garden I’m growing. My vision that have for my fashion career is not crystal clear but I imagine going toward the side of that includes product development, styling, and buying.   The business side of fashion merchandising does not interest me as much but I’m not discouraged for I have strong social skills that will prove very beneficial for my career.

My sense of style is still evolving therefore cannot claim myself to a specific aesthetic. I’m  one to very easily and quickly adapt to my environment which results in my interests or fashion sense complying to my surroundings. Since arriving at VCU, I have embraced the progressive, urbanized art scene that is prevalent in Richmond. Most people here listen to rap or indie music which can be seen in the street styles as well. Some of my favorite artists include Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean, Homeshake, Mild High Club, and countless more. The youth culture prevalent in this area is a unique and energizing experience that inspires me to step outside of my comfort zone.
